I've been burned.

I've been burned by "friends" and "family". As a result I have difficulty trusting people. As a result I sometimes burn others. My track record in relationships - both male and female - is spotty at best. I have difficulty with the intimacies of friendship, of family, of community and of life. There are only one or two people who I am spiritually close with - who I've cried with or shared my pain and joys with. I'd like there to be more but at 41 it's hard to change my spots.

The first time I came across this poem from Walt Whitman I fell to my knees in agony. It broke my heart because I truly understood the loneliness, the bitterness and the envy.

It is best to read it aloud.

I LOVE Tomatoes

We've been eating tomatoes from our garden, tomatoes from the farmers coop we belong to and tomatoes from other friends and family. I had no idea there were so many varieties of tomatoes.

I eat at least two or three every day. I eat them with salt or basil or cracked pepper or mozzarella cheese or olive oil. Sometimes I eat them with all of that together. I eat them standing over the sink; I eat them off a plate. I'll even eat them standing in the garden. I've been known to sop up the tomato juices and olive oil with fresh - and occasionally stale - French bread - or wonder bread or wheat bread. Once I sopped it up with a lonely hot-dog bun rediscovered in the back of the bread drawer.

A wasted tomato is a reason for deep, heartfelt tears.

However, I won't eat the plum tomato. I'm saving those for a purpose. I'm saving them for the same reasons some people press flowers or collect guns or take snapshots. I'm saving them for something special...something magical. I'm saving them for my wife's t Pomodori al Forno (okay it's not really her Pomodori al Forno but I'm not stupid).

Don't let the fancy words fool you - I have no idea what it means either. Although, I'm fairly certain "Pomodori al Forno" must mean "what is this I'm eating because I've died and gone to tomato food heaven" or something roughly like that.

I've been asking since we plucked the first plum tomato off the vine when she was going to make it. Every day I count them waiting for the time when the number of available plum tomatoes will justify the energy required to make them.

The law of conservation of mass/matter basically states that matter can neither be destroyed or created - only "that the mass of a closed system will remain constant over time, regardless of the processes acting inside the system." In other words this theory states that no matter what is done to that tomato - when it is finished being processed you will still have the same amount of matter and energy.

What a stupid theory. Anyone who tries one of these small miracles of wholesomeness knows something greater was created.

I was in the pub yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to fart. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my farts with the beat. After a couple of songs, I started to feel better.

I finished my pint and noticed that everybody was staring at me.

Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.

What is maturity?

Recently, in a fit of anger I stopped answering my cell phone when my wife called. I lost my temper and took on a "to hell with it" attitude. It wasn't real mature and was definitely passive aggressive. It was hardly fair to her and it escalated the intensity of the argument. "A man's own angry pride," wrote the English Poet Laureate Alfred Tennyson, "is cap and bells for a fool."

It is the same mindset of the child when, he or she doesn't get to be in charge, takes the ball and goes home. The idea that my attitude was childish is not appealing but it is accurate. As such, at forty-one years of age I've been giving the idea of "maturity" a lot of thought recently.

I like the idea of maturity being a "term used to indicate that a person responds to the circumstances or environment in an appropriate manner". Acting in an "appropriate manner" sounds simple enough but when I lose my temper at some moron driver and give them the one fingered salute, gossip about someone at work I dislike or even shirk my household responsibilities I'm certainly not being "appropriate" - let alone mature. In truth, it is the same reaction many eighth graders have when they are angry; I just do it with a better vocabulary.

During this contemplation of "maturity" as an action, I've been watching people around me trying to get a sense of what maturity looks like. What I discovered is no one individual is always mature. We all have our exposed nerve, that once stepped on causes us to revert to adolescence - and occasionally a toddler.

Most of the arguments in my marriage revolve around issues of maturity. One of my areas of immaturity is with money - I'm not good with it because I don't care about it. It's been an expensive lesson: due dates are not intended to be optional. Another is painting. The first time my wife asked me to paint I basically threw a tantrum. And I was thirty six.

What I've discovered is that all my actions are either mature or immature. Simple enough but it raised the question of why choose to react immature when intellectually I know it often involves negative consequences. What I discovered shocked me: I react immaturely when I'm in fear and maturely when I love. And when I say "love" I do not mean some romanticized, after-school special, vampire/werewolf Twilight version of love. I'm talking about "love" as a universal principle. Love is the absence of fear.

Every immature action I've ever taken in my life is because I fear one of three things:

I won't get what I want
I will lose something I have or
I've done something wrong and what will happen when others find out

In other words all of immature behavior is because I'm selfish, greedy, gluttonous, lustful, and pride-filled. I'm like the dog with two bones - I don't need two but I'm not going to share them either.

In talking with a friend about this she gave me this checklist. I don't know where it came from or where she found it but it is worth sharing. At the end of the day I read over the list and ask myself if I behaved in an appropriate manner. If I'm acting mature all my behaviors flow out of love.

Maturity is...

Accepting that I will never be perfect - and neither will others
Knowing who I am and what I value
Asking for help when I need it and acting on my own when I don't
Admitting I am wrong and making amends
Accepting love from others, even if I'm having a tough time loving myself
Recognizing I always have a choice and taking responsibility for the ones I make
Seeing that life is a blessing
Having an opinion without insisting that others share it
Forgiving myself and others
Having the courage to live one day at a time
Acknowledging that my needs are my responsibility
Caring for people without having to need to take care of them
Recognizing my strengths and weaknesses

Top Five Victories of a Common Man

...or an Autobiography in Life Lessons

ONE

I certainly make mistakes in life. My past is littered with mistakes, errors, blunders, miscalculations, gaffes and full-blown fiascos. As my Marine Corp Drill Instructor might say: “Good initiative, poor judgment.” Sometimes, it wasn’t even good initiative. The reality is every one of those experiences has value. Of course, many are painful, some are embarrassing, and occasionally hilarious, but all are meaningful. Embracing my mistakes, instead of being ashamed of them, is an accomplishment that changed my outlook towards life.

TWO

How to love – there is an achievement worth mentioning. The tests are varied. Most are differentiated in order to maximize student comprehension: how to love a parent, a brother, a daughter from afar, an ex-wife, the ying and the yang, life, the enemy, myself, and the Universe. I’m still learning. Sometimes, I have to retake test. Sometimes, I get to teach the course.

THREE
Success! What an achievement! A checklist: Fortune? No. Fame? No. Glory? (He says with a chuckle) No. Then what is the merit for calling it achievement? A family reunited, a love found, a service performed, renewed trust, a seed planted, a garden grown, a risk taken, a wrong righted and truth honored and honored by truth. These are the results of a 1,000 personal and anonymous achievements.

FOUR

I hated my family. Not for any one particular reason, there were many. Given time I could probably list off several dozen. The perceived slights, slams, and snubs of an oversensitive and immature man trapped me behind resentments and fear. How the times have changed. Because of willingness, honesty and humility the hatred is gone replaced by respect and love – there is an achievement worth mentioning.

FIVE

When my daughter knocks on my door, I’ll be ready. I’ll be the best man I can be. When I wake-up every morning the goal is to be a better man then yesterday. Sometimes, I am. Sometimes, I’m not. I am more often then I use to be. If I’m dead, and she asks about me, I hope my friends can tell the truth without embellishment – “He was a fine man who loved you everyday.” That is the achievement I live towards.

There were no glory days

I’ve always enjoyed Calvin and Hobbes. I think like Calvin and I aspire to act like Hobbes.

In reality many of my attitudes and beliefs about life are reflected in the dry and sarcastic humor of Bill Watterson’s comic. I collect Calvin and Hobbes comic books: the art is stimulating; the storytelling is inspired and the dialogue insightful. In just a few frames he depicts feelings and attitudes more concisely and accurately then many writers who blather on through an entire blog. Calvin has been gone from the newspaper for several years but when I am feeling cynical or somber I can turn to Watterson to find laughter and perspective.

Calvin’s school days resembles much of my school experience. I never liked school. Truthfully, I’m not sure school liked me. Like Calvin, I was socially and emotionally immature, often confused and unfortunately much too intelligent and creative for my own good.

There is a great Watterson strip where Calvin is sitting in the classroom being asked questions he doesn’t know the answer to, ridiculed by peers, disciplined by the principal and longingly pining to be outdoors. The last frame is Calvin imagining himself a fish out of water suffocating on the banks of the pond. The message of course is, while in school, he is a fish out of water both suffocating and drowning in turns.

That was me. When in school I felt I was constantly on the verge of drowning or suffocating. Every day in school was not about education or learning but rather it was about getting enough air while not being seen. Everything I did in school was about trying to survive.

Today I have perspective and maturity and can see the experience for what it was – hell. I was never able to conform or fit into the structured academic and social life of my school’s culture. Whether that was genetic, intellect, temperament or just bad timing I’m not really sure it matters. Entering a small cliquish community of teenagers there are only a handful of ways to break into the social groups – be a jock, be rich or set the school on fire.

In hindsight my best bet would have been to set the school ablaze.

The quickest way to being a middle school outcast is to stand out. For example, I won regional awards for my writing and poetry. Teachers and parents love that kind of recognition. Judges and teachers loved my writing and art. However, my newly-met peers used it as an excuse for a school year’s worth of humiliating taunting.

College poetry professors may get the starry eyed girls but middle school poets get beat walking home from school.

The camping trip was one more moment of character building followed by six years of terror. Without dwelling on details it involved a dock, a fish hook, and a dying sunfish. Oh yeah – and 6 boys trying to prove their manhood. I saw it as an opportunity to honor my father’s teaching that to kill something for jollies is wrong. Five of my six peers saw it as a lesson in leverage and physics.

Out of principle I left before the actual killing. I learned many valuable lessons from that experience. Having a reputation for doing the right thing apparently affects your ability to play spin the bottle, is worth at least two weeks worth of beatings on the way home from school and six years of harassment.

And for those who are curious – winning a ribbon at the school science fair for three consecutive years is also bad for your social standing. If you are looking to impress a cheerleader I do not recommend blowing through a funnel onto a Ping-Pong ball while explaining thermodynamics. However, if you are committed to this method I recommend a breath mint beforehand.

My parents often wondered why I was bitter, lonely and depressed. Of course, when I tried to talk to family and teachers in the hopes of finding some guidance I was told not to worry because high school was going to be different. They were right of course – in high school there were twice of many people for me to alienate.

Those things I was interested in – books, writing, science – were not cool in middle school. As such, by the time I reached high school – and had an opportunity to meet a whole new set of peers - I abandoned most of these interests and decided to play football simply in the hopes I could find a way to fit in with my peers.

It didn’t work.

It didn’t work for several reasons. The most obvious being I’d never played football before. Worse yet I didn’t like organized sports – the yelling, the rah-rah and the hypocrisy. Today I know I’m more of a Calvin-ball type personality – the only rule is there are no rules.

This is where principles get in the way again. After all, I knew the cheerleaders and the flag corps (although they didn’t know me because the thought of talking to one of them left me hyperventilating) and I knew what my peers in the locker room were saying about the same girls in the “get-laid brigade” and “whore corps”.

One of the first rules of locker room talk is to participate in the locker room talk. However, as this rule of locker room talk fell way below my number one rule of survival – arrive late, leave early – I successfully avoided participating. The downside of this rule of course is that it provides your peers plenty of time to hide your equipment.

Thankfully the coaches had my back. As such, when I arrived late to practice after rounding up my equipment I would run punishment sprints. This was easier than holding some of my peers accountable for good natured hazing. After all, as we know, character isn’t really important if you can run or throw the ball. Ask Maurice Clarett or Michael Vick.

At school social events, such as proms and dances, I constantly felt inadequate. As if at any moment I was going to die. I would break into sweats and inevitably find myself trying not to be seen. The results were often mortifying - and in hindsight hilarious. As if, like Calvin, I was going to be called to the board on a day when I had a huge tear in my pants and was wearing rocket-ship underwear. I felt that way almost every moment of middle school and everyday of high school. Terror is hardly conducive to learning.

I joke of course. Terror taught me a lot – starting with trust no one, avoid crowded hallways because someone may be waiting to ambush you and slam you against a locker for fun and avoid any public transportation that involves bright yellow busses.

Of course, this wasn’t other people’s fault and not everyone was wrong. I was often an immature and undisciplined student. The worst offenders were often immature and undisciplined peers. My perceptions of course were warped as I gradually became obsessed with the idea of belonging.

Ironic considering the groups I wanted to belong to consisted of the same people who were doing the bullying. In hindsight, this would be funny if it weren’t both tragic and true. I simple wanted to be liked. Actually I simply wanted to stop being insulted, ignored or harassed. Calvin had the playground bully Moe. The five primary bullies in my life were much more committed and half as bright.

Because of my immaturity, coupled to a misplaced and naïve belief life should be fair I incorrectly perceived school – and my life in general – as karmic punishment for some crime against humanity in a previous life. I started to believe I was getting what I deserved. I think this was the result of repeatedly being “jumped” on the way home from school - it may have been brain damage.

Naturally, one might think this might make someone cynical and bitter. You're right – I was. I was angry, cynical and bitter for a longtime. I even made poor choices for years after high school simply to prove something to a group of people that didn’t care. But that is a whole other story.

I went to two class reunions – the fifth and the tenth.

I spent the fifth reunion talking to the deaf boyfriend of a woman I barely knew from school. Not one person walked up to me and said hello or asked what I did. When I tried – and I did – my approach was met with monosyllabic responses.

I went to the tenth with a woman I graduated with after we reconnected at a random meeting at the Columbus Auto Show. Neither of us really wanted to go but we thought perhaps we were being close minded.

It was like high school all over – the same cliques, the same drunken conversations, the same hormones and the same harassment from the same knuckleheads. My date and I decided to do the Macarena with everyone else. Only after we got onto the dance floor did we realize it was the same cheerleaders – now aging - doing a routine for the same drunken dolts – also aging – who called these women whores and sluts back in the day.

Then I was insulted again for blocking the view by some drunken has-been jock who wanted to watch some drunken has-been cheerleader gyrating on the floor. We left and I’ve never been back.

Don’t misunderstand the vast majority of the people I graduated with are great people. I just never bothered to get to know them out of fear. Truthfully, though they never really got to know me either.

My wife, also an alum from the same high school, is flabbergasted at my lack of interest in attending reunions and class gatherings. When I explain that I spent every day for six years praying for it to be over so I could get away from that environment she is confused. Out of ignorance, she suggests I am exaggerating my experiences and lovingly attempts to minimize my humiliations. She doesn’t do it with maliciousness. Her experience in school was very different than mine. She graduated six years before me and she had a home and friends in school. She wrote for the newspaper, she was in the choir and she was in the top of her class. My senior year I took a class that allowed me to leave at 12:00 to go work a job. She loved school. I loved leaving school.

I imagine Calvin understands.

Old black water is the sign of our times

This blog is an act of shameless self-promotion.

First of all, my mom has told me since I was kid she wants me to write. She is my biggest fan - because she loves me. And really - don’t mothers know everything?

Over the years I’ve written in starts and fits but have never really committed to following through with it. I never really believed in my writing until recently. Possibly because it’s time consuming. Possibly because my writing style doesn’t fit a particular genre. Possibly because I’m afraid of commitment and criticism – amongst other things.

However, I made several personal commitments to do some things differently this year. One is running a marathon. A second is writing. I think part of this push to write is I turned 41 this year. Also, I had a husband of a friend tragically die recently. His death reminded me that when it’s time to go it’s time to go. I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way – but it is the truth.

So I started training for the marathon that is run in January 2010 in Phoenix. I also started a blog to put some of my writings out there. I’d like to invite you to my blog and to follow me - http://angry-patriot.blogspot.com and http://ajumpingmouse.blogspot.com.

I’m personally inviting you for two reasons:

1. Although we may not always agree I trust you will be respectful and offer constructive criticism on how to improve my writing.

2. If a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound? Writing is kind of like that as well. I like to think I write for myself but I don’t. I’m not sure anyone really does. My writing helps me see myself better. By hearing how people respond to my writing it helps me better understand myself, others, society, and my spiritual self.

I know – I sound like a bleeding heart, touchy feely writer already.

My father and I were joking recently that I’m too deep. I laughed because I feel like I’m a mile wide and an inch deep. I hope you will follow my writing, provide some feedback (even if we disagree) and share my writings with others.
